About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Technological advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have benefited our society and economy. However, AI development has been concentrated in technologically advanced countries, often overlooking the unique needs and challenges faced by less developed regions, such as the Global South.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

InteliGente guide students in developing AI solutions that are adapted to their context and culture. As a result, we foster a socially conscious mindset that is often overlooked in traditional programs. Moreover, our goal is to ensure that anyone, regardless of their background, can harness the power of AI to drive social impact. We also recognize the unique perspectives that each student experiences in their community, which is crucial to designing AI solutions that are ethical, effective, and culturally sensitive, providing an environment with great potential to solve challenges for different populations. Through our methodology, we aim to cultivate the next generation of visionary leaders from the Global South, with a particular focus on Latin America, who can transform the way AI research and development is approached and conducted globally, fostering innovation that reflects the diverse needs and perspectives of underserved regions.

How has it been spreading?

Our impact is already substantial: we have reached over 300,000 people directly and indirectly. This direct impact is calculated based on empowered students, access to solutions and materials, and events, while the indirect impact considers the audience reached through awards and media features. Our students have won more than 20 awards and recognitions and over 2,500 people have been educated using our materials. Additionally, our students have been featured in over 50 news articles.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Through our website, you can download materials like InteliGenteCards, designed to create discussions about ethical and socially responsible AI. You’ll also find news, awards, published articles, and developed initiatives — as well as access to our talks and events. On our social media platforms, we regularly share engaging and accessible content aimed at democratizing AI knowledge in a fun way.

Implementation steps

Registration
To ensure an ongoing and accessible opportunity for participation, registrations for the project are open every semester. This allows for the formation of at least two new groups annually, providing a constant window for interested parties. This regular approach to registration ensures that more students can benefit from the initiative, aligning with the goal of promoting inclusive and continuous education.
Introduction
Upon joining, students have the opportunity to conduct a project/study over up to 18 months in teams. To develop critical thinking, the project will use active methodologies, such as Problem-Based Learning (PBL). The project proposes three phases, each lasting six months. This division ensures that students are engaged in a complete cycle of learning, research, and extension, providing a comprehensive educational experience, forming citizens prepared to contribute positively to society.
First Phase — Teaching — Part 01 — Three Months
Students are prepared and instructed to understand basic concepts of AI and its responsible and conscious use through study materials, along with discussions with a mediator and peers. At this stage, students are encouraged to identify relevant problems in society that can be solved with AI, such as the Sustainable Development Goals.
First Phase — Teaching — Part 02 — Three Months
With the problem selected, another stage of studies and discussions about the theme begins, aiming to refine the focus of the subject and develop the students' skills in argumentation, communication, knowledge, planning, organization, and group work. At the end of this first stage, the group must present answers to various questions, in addition to responding to questions posed by the mediator and peers.
Second Phase — Research — Six Months
The groups dedicate most of their time to studying the implementation of their solutions, learning objectives, and the initial prototyping of the project, with weekly/biweekly discussions with the mediator and peers. This stage promotes a deeper immersion in research, encouraging students to explore and apply theoretical knowledge in practice, as well as developing skills in analysis and problem-solving.
Third Phase — Extension — Six Months
The groups finalize the implementation of the proposed solution and prepare a general presentation of the project, including storytelling and an extended summary/report. At this point, the groups are also encouraged to participate in idea competitions, events, conferences, and community activities to promote the project and connect with other professionals in the field, encouraging networking.
