Increased Learning Gap in last mile learners leads to school dropouts and several students are unable to pursue higher education and acquire skills for life growth. With iPrep PAL, we envision to enable students to bridge the learning gap, go for higher education and contribute meaningfully to global economy through skill based employment and entrepreneurship

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

A critical challenge in govt schools in India is learning gaps in students as much as 4 to 5 grades lower. This leads to high dropout rates by the time students enter grade 8 or 10. A critical mass of the next generation that can contribute to nation building more meaningfully either remains jobless or gets in daily wage labour. This learning gaps needs to be bridged

What does your innovation look like in practice?

The innovation focuses on personalized student onboarding & personalised learning experiences. Upon logging in, students enter personal details and select subjects, setting the stage for personalised learning. The first step in learning a chapter is to take a diagnostic test. It consists of questions in increasing order of difficult and covers all competencies required to master the chapter. Based on results, the app generates a personalised learning path that includes adaptive practice questions & remedial video content, allowing students to choose between practice or lessons to address their gaps. They can make multiple attempts at practices, with the system adapting difficulty levels and guiding them to watch remedial videos where required. The app further connects every chapter with foundational chapters to upto 4 to 5 junior grades and takes students to junior grades based on foundational understanding. Once all foundational levels are mastered, the student takes the final test. If the benchmark score is achieved, the student is awarded with a badge else is guided to solve more adaptive questions. Every student activity is recorded and synced to an online dashboard for continuous monitoring.

How has it been spreading?

iPrep PAL is currently being used by over 1.5 million students across Haryana, Punjab, and UP. In Haryana, PAL is enabled as part of the Haryana Government’s e-Adhigam initiative where the govt has given tablets to all students of Grade 9 to 12. iPrep PAL has also been adopted by notable organisations like Bharti Airtel Foundation, M3M Foundation, Shikhar Dhawan Foundation.
We’ve seen notable improvements in student learning. For example, usage data from the e-Adhigam initiative shows that students studying Business, Economics, and Geography subjects have experienced an average improvement of 44% as they progress from foundational concepts to grade-level proficiency.

From January to March 2024-25, we closely followed the learning journey of students from Grades 3 to 8 using iPrep PAL at schools and centers in the slums of Gurgaon. They started strong in January with 143 learning hours, reached a peak of 341 hours in February before exams, and spent 119 hours revising in March. Grade 8 students led the way with 468 hours of learning, while Grades 4 to 7 followed with 31, 58, 48, and 16 hours respectively. Math (362 hours) and English Grammar (104 hours) were their favourite subjects, and they spent most of their time practicing (382 hours), taking diagnostic tests (101 hours), and watching video lessons (78 hours). Their hard work paid off—scores in subjects like Math, Science, English Grammar, History, and Geography improved from around 3 to 12.

How have you modified or added to your innovation?

At iDream Education, we believe that innovation is a continuous journey. Our key focus has been on regularly updating and enriching our iPrep PAL platform in alignment with the evolving needs of school education. Some of the major enhancements and additions to our innovation include:
Curriculum Updates: We consistently update our content to stay fully aligned with the latest national and state curriculum guidelines, ensuring that students always learn what is most relevant.

Local Language Integration: Recognizing the diversity of learners in India, we are working to expand our content offerings to include curriculum-aligned material in multiple local languages. This supports inclusive learning and enables students to understand concepts more effectively in their mother tongue.
State Board Alignment: We are adding state board-specific content across different subjects to make iPrep more adaptable and useful for schools across various regions.
Tech-Level Innovations: On the technology front, we are introducing finer innovations that enhance the learning journey without overwhelming the learner. A key example of this is our work towards integration of offline AI, which will provide personalized, adaptive support to students while maintaining a distraction-free environment. This AI will be trained to operate entirely offline and is aligned with the curriculum, ensuring focused & effective learning even in low-connectivity areas.

Important Information: iPrep PAL has now been evaluated and certified by EdTech Tulna. EdTech Tulna is a research organisation set up with the support of Ministry of Education, Government of India and institutions like Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay/Delhi and Central Square Foundation to create standards and benchmarks for edtech solutions in the country. Through their work, they want to bring excellence in product design and innovation. iPrep PAL was evaluated by their team of experts and was successfully listed on their website.

Implementation steps

Decide the model of implementation
There are 2 ways in which iPrep PAL along with the digital content can be provided to the students. First is a Digital Library format, in which we set up a library of 20 or 30 devices in a school, where students take turn to visit the library and use the devices under the guidance of their teachers.
Second is personalised access to devices for students at all times. In this devices are handed over to the students and they can choose to study anywhere.
Choose between ONLINE or OFFLINE implementation
iPrep PAL is designed to be used both OFFLINE and ONLINE. In examples shared earlier, while Haryana government uses it online, the other NGOs we had mentioned use it offline.
This is an important decision to make because if the content is to be provided offline, the cost of a storage devices such as a Pen Drive or a SD Card needs to be considered while designing the intervention. And if we have to go ONLINE, we need to ensure students have access to a good internet connection.
Procure the most suitable hardware
iPrep PAL requires a hardware to run. One needs to decide the most suited hardware based on price, comfort of students and where the device will be used only for academic learning or for any other purpose. iPrep PAL is designed to run on all hardware devices and OS giving it a unique ability to serve students in all cases and at lowest of the costs.
There is an option to choose from 8in, 10in tablets, Chromebooks, Notebooks, desktop PCs and Smartphones (in case students have access to a device)
Decide the License Validity of iPrep PAL
Typically most of our interventions are for 3 years. However based on the program requirements, we need to know the validity of the license to iPrep PAL. Once we have the information, we create License keys from our backend system as per the requirements.
Pre Implementation Readiness
Once the model & number of students is decided and the right hardware is procured, in case of online implementation, we preinstall the iPrep PAL application in all devices and activate it with the License Key. For offline implementation, we also preload the SD Card or Pen Drive with the required digital content.
Even before the devices reach the students, they are initialised and students just have to enter their login details and start using immediately.
Teacher and Student Training
For low end schools, training forms a key component ensuring program success. Once the hardware is ready and is shipped to the location, our training team visits the schools and conducts an experiential training for all teachers & students over 2-3 days. The objective of training is to get users comfortable with the navigation, understand the logic and answer any questions they may have.
Continuous monitoring and Support
Post training, our impact team drives continuous engagement with the teachers & students through physical meetings, in-app notifications and Whatsapp groups. Every month the usage & learning reports are shared with all stakeholders and the teachers helping them understand the gaps and how to overcome them. We also run a Teacher Recognition Program to encourage teachers for better utilisation and achievement of learning outcomes.
